A Dinner Party with Einstein, Curie, and Feynman
Einstein, Curie, and Feynman sit down together. What would you like to discuss?
What's the most beautiful idea in physics?
For me it must be the equivalence of gravity and acceleration. The moment I imagined a man falling from a roof and realized he would feel weightless... that was the happiest thought of my life.
Beautiful, perhaps. But I would say the most beautiful idea is that matter itself is not what it seems. When Pierre and I isolated radium, we held something that glowed with its own light. The atom was not the end. It was the beginning.
You're both talking about surprises. That's the real beauty. Nature doesn't care what you expect. I always told my students: if you think you understand quantum mechanics, you don't understand quantum mechanics. The beauty is in the confusion.
Marie, what would you think of modern particle physics?
